    Sr. Embedded Systems Engineer

    Our Opening and Your Responsibilities
    Reporting to the R&D Manager, this position will be responsible for the Linux embedded operating system development and integration with embedded application software and electronics for a series of analytical instruments. Using various embedded Linux operating systems authoring frameworks and Mettler Toledo proprietary application software, you will be responsible for all development phases of the embedded image from operating system design, synthesis, configuration, deployment, and testing. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

    Product Design and Engineering 
    • Designing embedded Linux operating system architectures and creating embedded Linux development frameworks. 
    • Proposing, designing, developing, and deploying robust image production, distribution, and field upgrade strategies to support the development, production, and maintenance of instruments based on embedded Linux and associated technologies. 
    • Conducting internal reviews for your proposed operating systems' designs with respect to various criteria, to include, but not limited to, performance, security, testability, manufacturability, and serviceability. 
    • Collaborating with embedded software engineers, desktop software engineers, and product managers to define, partition, and expose operating system resources for embedded and desktop software's use. 
    • Investigating new embedded Linux frameworks and following various Linux distribution releases for future security updates, product improvements, and development productivity. 
    • Working with multi-disciplinary team of engineers and product managers to research and develop new products. 
    • Other duties as assigned. 
    Project Management 
    • Managing multiple projects simultaneously in various states of design or development. 
    • Driving projects to completion with agreed performance, delivery, and cost targets. 
    • Providing clear communication for team members to facilitate the completion of defined goals, objectives, and timelines. 
    Quality and Testing 
    • Designing for manufacturability and modularity under the processes and procedures set in place and in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 and ATEX Annex VII (ATEX 94/9/EC, 13980). 
    • Consistently maintaining a high level of attention to detail and documentation to ensure ISO 9001:2000 and ATEX Annex VII (ATEX 90/9/EC, 13980) compliance at all times. 
    • Providing customer support for product design related to software/firmware problems or special applications. 
    • Troubleshooting software/firmware defects, analyzing and solving complex technical problems, and implementing and testing bug fixes.
    What You Need to Succeed
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
    • Seven (7) years of experience on Linux operating systems, preferably in the embedded market space. 
    • Experience with Linux distributions, to include, but not limited to: Ubuntu, Debian, Yocto-based embedded "custom" distributions, and PetaLinux (Xilinx/Yocto). 
    • Expert level knowledge of Linux operating system internals, including, but not limited to, boot optimization, security considerations, desktops and headless deployments, memory management, and troubleshooting. 
    • Expert level knowledge of Linux operating system configuration including boot loading, rootfs, security, storage partitioning, device tree creation, and maintenance. Kernel module device driver development experience is a plus. 
    • Experience with any (or all) of the following embedded Linux development frameworks: Nvidia SDK Manager, PetaLinux, Buildroot, OpenEmbedded, and Yocto Project. 
    • Familiarity with DevOps workflows and continuous integration and testing concepts. 
    • Familiarity with cross-compilation tool chains and embedded software development techniques, including on-target and off-target development. 
    • Knowledge of processors, processor subsystems, SoMs and SoCs; experience with ARM is a plus. 
    • Experience with embedded application development using the GNU tools in C/C++ and open-source libraries is a plus. 
    • Experience with analytical or similar instruments preferred. 
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. 
    • SAP knowledge preferred.
