Software Testing Manager

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Software Engineering, this position is responsible for leading the software quality and testing function for AutoChem software products that control and integrate laboratory instrumentation. As a member of the Software Engineering leadership team, this role works closely with Software Development Managers, Product Owners, and global R&D counterparts to ensure effective software quality practices, comprehensive testing, and successful product delivery. What you will do
  • Lead, coach, and develop the U.S.-based Software Testing team, including performance management, career development, workload planning, hiring, and capability development.
  • Provide functional leadership for offshore testing resources and partner with offshore management on priorities, staffing, performance, and resource needs.
  • Establish and continuously improve software quality assurance practices, test methodologies, and standards in alignment with the METTLER TOLEDO PLM framework.
  • Lead risk-based manual, exploratory, functional, regression, system, and integration testing, with particular emphasis on software interaction with laboratory instrumentation.
  • Oversee the Software Testing Lab, including instruments, configurations, test environments, capacity, and operational readiness.
  • Work closely with Software Development Managers, Product Owners, Project Managers, Scrum Masters, and other stakeholders to integrate quality and testing throughout the Agile development lifecycle.
  • Maintain strong alignment with global R&D counterparts on testing practices, priorities, release objectives, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with global R&D automation leadership to implement the organization's automation strategy and maintain an effective balance of automated, manual, exploratory, and hardware-integrated testing.
  • Establish meaningful quality metrics and effective defect-management practices to identify risk, improve test effectiveness, and address recurring quality issues.
  • Assess software quality and release readiness and communicate significant risks, defects, testing status, and recommendations to project stakeholders and Software Engineering leadership.
  • All other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience in software quality assurance, testing, or related software engineering disciplines, including at least three years of people-management experience leading a quality or testing function within a structured product-development organization.
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance and test-management practices, including test strategy, risk-based testing, defect management, metrics, traceability, and release readiness.
  • Experience with manual, exploratory, system, integration, and regression testing of complex software products.
  • Experience testing software integrated with physical hardware, instrumentation, or embedded systems, including managing or coordinating physical test environments or laboratories.
  • Strong working knowledge of Agile software development practices.
  • Experience leading distributed or international teams in a global, cross-functional environment.
  • Working knowledge of test automation, continuous integration, and continuous delivery/deployment (CI/CD) practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with scientific instrumentation, laboratory automation, or analytical instruments.
  • Experience in a regulated, quality-managed, or formally controlled product-development environment.
  • Familiarity with software testing standards or frameworks such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 or ISTQB.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps or comparable lifecycle, defect-tracking, and test-management platforms.
  • Professional certification in software testing, quality, Agile practices, or a related discipline.
